Instead of a wicked stepmother and three wicked stepsisters to make her life miserable, a cold, distant stepfather ignores Eloise and twin stepbrothers who fluctuate between being dandies and bullies. Eloise has a group of animal friends, including a parrot with a vulgar mouth. Her stepfather invites the new Earl of Marlton to his annual spring ball in hopes of arranging a marriage between Charles (the earl) and Eloise. Things get off to a bad start when Charles arrives. Albert, the rude parrot, calls him a fool and promptly poops on his shoulder. Even though the house party is plagued by pranks pulled by the twins (the last one is a doozy), Charles and Eloise get to know each other better (sometimes due to the pranks). A wonderfully entertaining story! I don't know what was more hilarious the animals or the humans. I liked the Cinderella twist.
A quick romance read with a hint of a Cinderella theme. Although the stepfather isn't quite evil, his twin sons are. Eloise is a strong female lead that holds onto her beliefs and enjoyable to read. The story flows without feeling rushed as the attraction between Eloise and Charles blooms without either realizing.
Perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon. This is a sweet, light-hearted yet emotional historical romance novella that can be devoured in one go. I loved Eloise's mix of kindness, sass and insecurity, and Charles's determination and dedication. The twins were perfectly vile, and I loved hating them. And Albert the parrot was another highlight.
Dance With Me At Midnight by Samantha Holt is a fairly quick read, a great choice for historical romance fans with limited time for reading. Ms Holt has once again delivered a fine, well-written book. This is a fun historical romance. Charles and Eloise's story is loaded with madness and mayhem caused by her collection of unwanted animals and her devious brothers. There's plenty of drama, humor and just a hint of spice. Ms Holt hit this one out of the park with the balance of amazing characters and humor in this book. I loved reading Dance With Me At Midnight and look forward to reading many more books from Samantha Holt in the future. Dance With Me At Midnight is book 3 in the Regency Fairy Twists Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
This was an interesting, quick and fun read. Eloise is a girl with a passion for wayward and abandoned animals who isn't thinking about a future husband. She doesn’t know that her stepfather has already promised her to Charles and her betrothed is coming to the event she is planning to inspect the goods. The two get off to a rocky start and it seems unlikely that their negative opinions of one another will change but they start to realize that they have more respect for, and interest in, each other than they originally thought. I like the subtle plays on the Cinderella story. Eloise has evil step-siblings and all the palace animals around her. Charles is left stranded by the horse at midnight instead of her. I only wish there was more romance and heat between the two, but I think it was meant to be a "clean" novella. Would recommend for a brief read.
